Walk of the Spirit
Being in the Spirit of God is a lot like trying to find your way to a new café in a city you've never visited before. At first, you’re a little lost—maybe you get turned around, take a wrong street, or even have to ask a local for directions. If you’re tech-savvy (or just need reassurance), you pull out your phone and let Google Maps guide you. You're feeling a bit uncertain, and every turn feels like an adventure in “how did I end up here?” But after some wandering and trial and error, you finally arrive. Success!
The next time you set out on the same journey, you're a bit more confident. You remember a few landmarks, but your brain still recalls all those wrong turns from before. So, you pull out your phone again, just to be sure. But with each new trip, the route starts to become more familiar. By the third time you head in that direction, you don’t even need to think about it. Your feet almost instinctively know where to go, like your body’s on autopilot. You’ve done the route enough that you just know the way, and you don’t need a map to guide you anymore.
And that’s exactly how it is with learning to walk in the Spirit of God. In the beginning, it can feel like you’re stumbling along, trying to figure out which direction is right. You’re uncertain. You might wonder, “Is this God’s will, or is it just me? Am I hearing His voice, or is it just my own thoughts?” It’s like you’re constantly pulling out your “spiritual map”—the Bible, prayers, advice from others—trying to find the right way. But with time, as you spend more time with God and lean into His presence, something beautiful happens: You start to recognize His guidance more clearly.
At first, it’s a bit of a mental workout. You’re actively trying to align your choices with His will, using your intellect and discernment to check your decisions. But over time, you begin to recognize the subtle, still voice of the Spirit in your life. His direction starts to feel like second nature, not something you have to overthink or strain to hear. You might find yourself making choices that align with God’s heart, and it feels like you’re following the route to that café without even realizing it. It’s no longer a conscious effort; it’s the natural outflow of your relationship with Him.
And just like the first time you ventured into that new city, there may still be moments of uncertainty, a wrong turn here and there. But with patience, practice, and surrender, you begin to trust the process. You learn that sometimes the detours are part of the journey, teaching you to depend even more on His guidance. Just like finding your way to the café, walking in the Spirit of God becomes smoother with every step. What once felt unfamiliar now feels like home.
So, in the end, walking in the Spirit isn’t about following a set of rigid rules. It’s about continuing to walk, listen, and trust—until the path becomes familiar, and the decisions you make are in sync with His will, almost without thinking. And before you know it, you’ll be walking confidently, letting the Spirit lead you to places you never imagined, with each step becoming more instinctual and natural, just like a walk to your favorite café.
