The True Prosperity Gospel: Growth and Trials
Many are familiar with the prosperity gospel—the belief that a relationship with God results in physical, financial, and spiritual wealth. While the Bible does indicate that God rewards those who earnestly seek Him (Hebrews 11:6), the nature of these rewards may differ from our initial expectations.
If we view God as a loving father rather than a genie that grants all our wishes, we gain insight into His intentions. A father may have the means to grant every wish but instead teaches important lessons through discipline and hard work. For example, a father might deny a child's request for candy to encourage moderation, or he might require his child to work for a luxury item like a car. This reflects God’s desire for us to grow into our best selves through challenges and perseverance (James 1:2-4).
While God may indeed bless us with prosperity, these blessings often manifest as character growth, wisdom, and the development of talents (Proverbs 2:6). We might also receive loyal friendships or healed relationships which can be more valuable than wealth itself. However, God prepares us to use these gifts in ways that honor Him. If we misuse our blessings, they can lead to negative outcomes, revealing that true prosperity comes with responsibility (Matthew 25:29).
Tribulation often accompanies prosperity; it is through trials that God shapes us and prepares us for the blessings He has in store (Romans 5:3-5). Understanding this can transform our perspective, allowing us to find encouragement even in difficult times, knowing that God has treasures awaiting us on the other side of our struggles. This is the essence of the true prosperity gospel.
