Cleaned by Christ: A Spiritual Shower
Have you ever experienced the refreshing feeling of a shower after an intense workout, where sweat and dirt are washed away, leaving you feeling renewed and fresh? After that cleansing moment, you step out of the shower, dry off, put on clean clothes, and settle into comfort, feeling a sense of peace and renewal. In the same way, this is how we should feel spiritually when we receive Christ. Just as a shower washes away the grime and discomfort of the body, the blood of Jesus cleanses us from the filth of sin that weighs on our soul.
When we accept Christ’s sacrifice, we are spiritually “cleaned” — washed of our sins. Jesus’ blood, shed on the cross, purifies us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:7). The Holy Spirit, who dwells within us, becomes like a constant spiritual shower, continually purifying our hearts and minds. The discomfort we feel when we live in sin is similar to the discomfort of sitting in a soiled diaper — constantly restless, searching for relief. Many people turn to addictions and unhealthy habits to escape this inner discomfort, yet those things can never truly cleanse the soul. Only Christ can wash us clean.
Jesus Himself invites us to come to Him and be washed. "Come now, let us reason together," says the Lord. "Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool" (Isaiah 1:18). Through His sacrifice, we are freed from the grip of sin and its consequences — guilt, shame, and despair. Jesus promises that those who come to Him will find rest for their souls (Matthew 11:28).
Sin, like dirt on our bodies, makes us uncomfortable. But we often try to hide it or cover it up, thinking we can manage on our own. However, God knows everything. There is nothing hidden from His sight. Psalm 139:1-2 says, “O Lord, you have searched me and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar.” Since God already knows us fully, there’s no point in hiding the broken parts of ourselves. Instead, when we bring our sins and struggles to Him with honesty, He is faithful to cleanse us. 1 John 1:9 assures us, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
God is like a spiritual washing machine, constantly purifying us when we come to Him with a sincere heart. When we surrender ourselves to Him, we can experience the continual cleansing and renewal that comes from His grace. This process is ongoing, as we grow closer to Him, becoming more like Christ, and living a life that reflects His holiness.
As we are honest with God, confessing our sins and struggles, we can find lasting freedom and peace, knowing that He will wash us clean and make us whole. “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me” (Psalm 51:10). Just as a fresh shower leaves us feeling renewed, so does the grace of God, leaving us spiritually refreshed and ready to live for Him.
So, don’t hesitate to come to Him — Jesus is ready and waiting to wash you clean.
