A Divine Dance: Keep in step with Jesus.
Dancing with a partner is an incredibly intimate and harmonious form of movement. It’s a silent conversation between two people, where words are unnecessary. Instead, there is a mutual understanding that forms through trust and awareness of each other’s presence. To move gracefully across the floor, a duo must create a synergy by intuitively learning the other’s body language, rhythm, and mind, without speaking a single word. They must learn to trust each other, yielding to the movement rather than controlling it. In many ways, this is a beautiful metaphor for our relationship and communication with God.
Just as dancers must attune themselves to each other’s rhythm, we are invited to align ourselves with God’s rhythm. Jesus, the man who bridged the gap between the physical and spiritual realms, offers us this profound partnership. He performed the ultimate miracle by appearing to His followers after His death, confirming that He was not bound by earthly existence. This act not only transformed those who witnessed it but also serves as an eternal reminder that His spirit is alive and active today. If we are willing to look beyond the material world, we can trust in the evidence of Jesus and recognize that He is walking with us through every step of our lives. Like a perfect dance partner, He offers His hand, waiting for us to take hold and join Him in a Divine dance—a movement not confined to the limits of our world, but one that transcends space and time.
The question is: What does it look like to dance with someone we cannot see or touch? This is where faith comes into play. Before any dance can begin, we must know who we are dancing with. In a human partnership, dancers practice together, learning each other’s strengths, weaknesses, and preferences. Similarly, we must learn who Jesus is—His character, His teachings, and His love for us. As we grow in understanding, we begin to move in step with Him, guided by His Spirit.
In any dance, there is a clear dynamic between the leader and the follower. This dynamic is crucial for the dance to flow smoothly. If both partners try to lead, chaos ensues—steps get fumbled, toes are stepped on, and the graceful rhythm is lost. In our spiritual dance with Jesus, we are invited to let Him lead. He knows the path, the steps, and the rhythm far better than we do. Yet, so often, we try to take control, thinking we know best or becoming impatient when the pace doesn’t match our expectations. But when we surrender and allow Jesus to guide us, we find ourselves moving with a purpose and beauty that far surpasses anything we could have orchestrated on our own.
Letting Jesus lead doesn’t mean we lose our individuality or agency. Instead, it means trusting that He sees the bigger picture—the entire choreography of our lives—while we might only see one step at a time. When we follow His lead, we enter into a divine partnership that brings peace, joy, and fulfillment. As in a dance, we are still active participants; we are not passive. We must stay attuned to His signals, His nudges, and His direction, even when we can’t see where He’s leading us.
This divine dance with Jesus isn’t always easy. There will be times when we stumble, when we feel out of sync, or when we’re unsure of the next step. But the beauty of dancing with Jesus is that He is patient and full of grace. He doesn’t get frustrated when we miss a step or lose the rhythm. Instead, He gently guides us back into the flow, helping us regain our footing. In those moments, we learn not only about God’s grace but also about the beauty of surrender—of letting go of control and trusting in His guidance.
Dancing with Jesus is a journey of faith. It requires us to quiet our fears and doubts, to stop trying to anticipate every step, and to simply trust that He knows the way. It’s an invitation to live in the moment with Him, fully present, fully surrendered, and fully attuned to His movement in our lives.
This dance is deeply spiritual, and the Bible offers verses that guide us in aligning ourselves with God’s steps. Proverbs 16:9 says, "The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps." Just like in a dance, we may have plans, but true grace comes when we allow God to guide us.
Psalm 37:23 adds, "The steps of a man are established by the Lord, when he delights in His way." The joy of surrendering to God's lead, allowing Him to establish our steps, brings us into harmony with His divine will, much like a flawless dance where every move is filled with purpose and beauty.
Finally, Galatians 5:25 encourages us to "keep in step with the Spirit," calling us to remain aligned with the movements of God’s Spirit. Just as dancers must remain in sync with one another, we are invited to align ourselves with the Holy Spirit’s lead, trusting in the guidance and direction of God in every area of our lives.
So, as we learn who we are dancing with, let us also learn to let Him lead. When we do, we find ourselves part of a spiritual silhouette unlike anything we’ve ever experienced before—moving in perfect harmony with the Creator of the Universe, the One who knows the steps and the rhythm of our lives better than we ever could. Through this dance, we experience the profound truth that with Jesus as our partner, we are never alone, and we are always moving toward a greater purpose.
